on the fox report. first, a virtual army of border patrol agents, sheriffs investigators and the f.b.i. now combing the mexican border to find who ever shot and killed one of their own. it happened earlier today near the town of naco, southeast of tucson in a known drug smuggling corridor there. three border patrol agents were together when the shooting happened. the agent who died is nicholas ivy, 30 years old. another of the agents wounded, but expected to survive, and a third was unhurt. >> the f.b.i. is at the scene is investigating and is going to get to the bottom of this. >> all of this now not far from the border patrol station named for brian terry, the last agent fatally shot in the line of duty. investigators found guns linked to the failed weapons sting operation fast and furious at the scene where he died in 2010. william lajeunesse with the news live tonight in los angeles. william? >> bill, naco is a small, quiet border town until the sun goes down. for years it was the single busiest spot on the border and today it remain has major drug highway. early this morning, around 2:

in south san jose. fbi agents arrested two men on federal drug charges. the agency says it's gang task force led the operation but it won't say if the suspects are part of a larger organized crime or gang. sources tell nbc bay area news the neighborhood is for parolees and lots of people on probation. >>> today bay area relatives of ambassador chris stevens announced a special memorial service for the u.s. diplomat killed in libya last month. the ceremony will take place at san francisco's city hall october 16th. steven's family has invited a list of dignitaries, including george schultz and senator dianne feinstein. stevens grew up in the bay area attending piedmont high. after, he went on to uc berkeley and uc hastings in san francisco for law school. the public is being invited to the service but you should know the city hall rotunda only holds about 700 people. stevens was just 52 years old. >>> it was one thing when burglars took their jewelry. when they took the family puppy, a san jose city councilman stepped in. burglars first broke into melissa's home last summer. on monday he

. >> reporter: at roadblocks police and fbi agents are stopping everyone asking questions, searching cars. >> in the last couple of days, weeks, have you heard anything suspicious? >> reporter: cops are saturating the streets knocking on every door. a team of divers was sent to check a lake near jessica's house but found nothing. police are even scanning social media for clues. >> we were hoping that we were going to get anything, just a piece that was really going to steer this investigation and way, and we still are -- it's a very broad investigation. we just don't have that piece yet. >> reporter: jessica left home friday morning to meet up with friends for the walk to school, but the girl with the pink and purple glasses never arrived. her school called home, but her mother, sarah, who works nights and was asleep, missed the call. she woke that afternoon to a nightmare. by the time she called police, jessica had been missing eight hours. investigators are now reviewing recent calls for possible connections. they note that just two weeks ago, jessica's school sent home a letter warning

, the f.b.i. confirmed a team of agents visited benghazi yesterday, for the first time. until now, the group had stayed away, due to security concerns. a long-standing battle over google's book-scanning project was settled today. authors and publishers filed suit against the company back in 2005, saying it violated their copyrights. google launched the project a year earlier, making digital copies of books from major research libraries. in all, more than 20 million books have been scanned. now, publishers will get to choose which books are included. a lawsuit with authors is still ongoing. facebook now has one billion users. the number-one social media site announced today that it reached the milestone in september. it said the median age of users is 22 and the five top markets are brazil, india, indonesia, mexico and the united states. despite the rising customer base, facebook stock has lost 40% of its value since the company went public in may. those are some of the day's major stories. now, back to judy. >> woodruff: fears that the syrian civil war may escalate into a regional
